Hurricane Information Center

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. The following information is provided to help you plan before, during and after a hurricane.

Reporting During and After a Storm

  • Business Survey – In the event of a hurricane or other business interruption, this survey will allow the chamber to know the status of chamber investor businesses so that we can pass the information along to those who inquire. 
     
  • MyCoast South Carolina – Portal for DHEC to collect and analyze pictures and data relating to coastal events. King Tides and Storm Witness allow people to send photos of high tides and storm damage.
     
  • Media Sightings – If you see regional or national media on or nearby your property before, during or after a hurricane or tropical storm, please call a member of the Area Recovery Council’s (ARC) Communications Committee as soon as possible.

Know Your Zone

Evacuation Routes

Horry County Know Your Zone is a public education campaign to inform the citizens and visitors of Horry County of the new hurricane evacuation zones and their vulnerability to storm surge. 

Use Horry County’s interactive map to find your zone.

Zone A

  • Areas east of House Creek from the SC/NC state line to the center of Cherry Grove Beach, with minor fluctuations inland.
  • Areas east of Hillside Dr. and Ocean Blvd. and east of Hwy. 17 Business in Briarcliffe Acres.
  • Areas east of Kings Rd. and down Ocean Blvd. to Springmaid Beach.
  • Areas east of U.S. Business 17 (S. Kings Hwy.) from Myrtle Beach State Park to the Georgetown County line, with coastal fluctuations in Surfside Beach and Garden City.

Zone B

  • Areas east of Hwy. 17 from Little River to Atlantic Beach.
  • Areas east of U.S. Business 17 (Kings Hwy.) from the U.S. Hwy. 22 interchange to Springmaid Beach.
  • Areas east of U.S. Business 17 from 16th Ave. N. to Vista Dr. in Surfside Beach.
  • Areas between the Georgetown County line, TPC Blvd., Hwy. 707 and Hwy. 17.

Zone C

Areas between Hwy. 701 and Hwy. 544, with some fluctuations to Myrtle Beach International Airport and Waccamaw Blvd.

Sheltering locations for hurricanes and other disasters

Shelter Locations

This list is provided as a resource only. Shelters listed below may not be opened or may change during the approach of a storm. Tune to radio and television stations for current information. Visit the Horry County Hurricane Information Center for directions to the shelters. Waccamaw Regional Transportation Authority, known as The Coast RTA, will provide rides to the area’s shelters. Visit The Coast RTA for evacuation pickup points.

Special Medical Needs Shelter

If you or a loved one has special medical needs, you should contact the S.C. Dept. of Public Health (formerly the S.C. Dept. of Health and Environmental Control) regarding their special medical needs shelter. In the event of a hazard, such as a hurricane, officials will direct you to call 855-472-3432 to gain admission to the Special Medical Needs Shelter. 

Shelter Checklist

  • Baby food and diapers
  • Blankets, pillows and/or sleeping bags
  • Cards, games, books
  • Drinking water
  • Eating utensils
  • Extra batteries
  • Favorite toy or blanket
  • First-aid kit
  • Identification and valuable papers
    (such as tax bills, drivers licenses, utility bills, insurance papers, home inventories, important telephone numbers, etc.)
  • Medicine
  • Nonperishable food
  • One flashlight per person
  • Toiletries
  • Do not bring pets, firearms or alcohol. In planning for the hurricane season, do not forget your pets. If an evacuation is necessary, pet owners are urged to make arrangements to evacuate their animals as well.

Reentry Information

  • Horry County Reentry – Reentry will be conducted in phases beginning with allowing those with Level I access into the impacted areas to restore essential services and infrastructure.
  • Public Information Phone System (PIPS) – 866-246-0133 – This phone line is staffed in Columbia, providing information on evacuations, shelters, damage assessment and reentry. This number is activated once an evacuation is ordered.
  • Business/Organization Reentry Process – The state provides a system for post-disaster reentry certification for businesses and organizations that assist in the restoration of utilities and other services. The South Carolina Department of Commerce coordinates the program. To learn more, click here.  
  • Online Traffic Tools and Evacuation Routes – South Carolina Department of Transportation offers an online interactive traffic map to help users find routes best suited for their needs year-round. SCDOT provides a GIS map outlining all evacuation routes for the state. If traveling between states, visit the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Traffic and Road Closure Map and click the appropriate state.
