The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed business leaders and community members on June 10 for a Legislative Update focused on key public policy issues impacting the Grand Strand’s economy, business community and future growth.
Led by Chamber President Jimmy Gray and Advocacy Manager Robert Whitehurst, the session provided an overview of the June 9 primary elections and major legislation approved during the 2026 session of the South Carolina General Assembly.
The discussion highlighted several policy changes designed to support South Carolina businesses, encourage investment and improve the state’s competitiveness.
Among the measures discussed was South Carolina’s recently enacted income tax reform, which established a new two-bracket tax system and provides tax relief for many residents across the state.
Attendees also received updates on legislation reducing taxes on business equipment and furniture. Effective July 1, the new law lowers taxes on certain business personal property and provides relief for many small businesses, including retailers, restaurants and hospitality operators.
Additional discussion focused on legislation reducing taxes on boats and watercraft through a phased rate reduction, benefiting boat owners, marinas and businesses that support the region’s coastal economy.
Infrastructure and transportation remained a central topic throughout the presentation. Chamber leaders highlighted ongoing efforts to improve transportation planning, accelerate road projects and advocate for investments necessary to support the Grand Strand’s continued growth.
The update also covered several priorities included in the Chamber’s 2026 Advocacy Agenda, including workforce development, natural gas capacity improvements, coastal protection, beach renourishment and policies that support a strong business climate.
The session reinforced the importance of regional collaboration and sustained advocacy at the local, state and federal levels. As the Grand Strand continues to grow, the Chamber remains committed to advancing policies that strengthen the economy, support employers and position the region for long-term success.
