Regional Stakeholders Coordinate Ahead of Peak Hurricane Season

Community leaders, emergency management officials and nonprofit partners gathered June 17 to strengthen hurricane preparedness efforts across the Grand Strand ahead of the most active months of hurricane season, with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce participating as part of its ongoing commitment to business and community resilience.

The meeting was hosted by the Myrtle Beach Fire Department and Emergency Management team at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot with members of the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) and the Horry County Local Emergency Planning Committee, bringing together community partners ahead of the most active months of hurricane season.

For MBACC, the meeting reflects the importance of preparedness as part of protecting the Grand Strand’s residents, visitors and business community.

“A strong community is a prepared community,” said Robert Whitehurst, MBACC Advocacy Manager and Co-Chair of the Waccamaw VOAD. “These meetings help build the relationships and communication channels that are critical before, during and after a storm.”

Participants received updates from local agencies, discussed available resources and reviewed the seasonal hurricane outlook. The meeting included representatives from emergency management, public safety, nonprofit organizations, local government, private-sector partners and community organizations.

The Waccamaw VOAD helps connect voluntary, nonprofit, faith-based and community organizations involved in disaster response and recovery. The Horry County LEPC supports emergency planning and coordination around hazardous materials and other community risks.

By bringing these partners together before a storm threatens the area, the Grand Strand is better positioned to respond quickly, support residents and help businesses recover.

By strengthening coordination before a storm occurs, community partners can help reduce disruptions, support recovery efforts and build long-term resilience for residents, visitors and local businesses.
